This publication is intended for the back yard homesteader or a small non-integrated non corporate swine operation. Most small swine growers have animal attachments and work one on one like in the 1940-50’s. This all disappeared in the 1980’s forward. My first 15 years of practice I saw a lot of swine. – Dr. Paul Dettloff

- All pigs get round worms (ascarids). Watch for a cigarette cough, as the larva migrate through the liver and lungs.
- Pigs thrive on dirt. 60% of their food comes from underground in a natural state.
- Little, fast growing pigs run out of iron. Always have Kelp and humates available free choice. Black dirt also supplies iron. Little pigs on concrete may need iron supplimentation.
- For restraining or corning a pig in a pen, use a plywood panel 2′ x 3′ with a handle hold cut out and force then into a corner with somebody behind the panel, holding it up.
- Don’t farrow pigs when tempurature is over 85 degrees (July and August). Sows get MMA (no milk), udders get swollen – hot and hard. They get very sick and the little pigs starve.
- Immediately after the last baby pig is born, the sow or gilt will go into a grunt. THis means she is done farrowing and is talking to her piglets. She goes into a low staccato grunt about every 2-3 seconds. She lays on her side when she does this. Pigs are smart. Sometimes rubbing her udder will help her start her grunt. Very unique biological phenomenon.
- Feeding swine non-GMO corn empirically has shown less disease issues of all kind.
- Enclosed swine building over pits with equipotential planes can be a major disease problem from DC current especially in the watering system.
